INEB - Instituto de Engenharia Biomédica is a private non-profit association with the statute of public interest founded in 1989. In 2008 INEB established the consortium I3S – Instituto the Investigação e Inovação em Saúde, together with the University of Porto (UPorto), the Institute for Molecular and Cell Biology and the Institute of Molecular Pathology and Immunology of UPorto. In 2014, I3S was among the 11 national institutions rated as outstanding by the national Foundation for Science and Technology. The Mission of INEB is to generate knowledge, by promoting research, advanced training and technology transfer in biomedical engineering. INEB is an internationally recognized interdisciplinary research institution, where integrative engineering solutions are applied to improve human health, involving specialists in biomaterials, tissue regeneration, nanomedicine, bioimaging, medical signals, geoepidemiology, biology and medicine. About 175 persons work presently at INEB, including 55 PhDs and about 80 post-graduate students. In the past decade 9 patents, 38 prototypes, 6 products and 3 spin-offs were generated at INEB, along with hundreds of scientific publications (over 300 in the past 5 years). The excellence of research performed at INEB is regularly recognized through international and national prizes, and is translated in the establishment of collaborations with over 100 institutions worldwide, from academia, hospitals and companies.
